Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Plants succulent short-lived.

Stems: Stems 3–6 dm, internodes 1–5 cm, often rooting at nodes.

Roots: Roots fibrous.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades cordate-ovate, 1–3 × 0.5–5 cm. Apex acute. Surfaces minutely papillate, appearing smooth. Margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary, axillary pedicel 8–15 mm. Calyx lobes 4, unequal, 2 larger and leaflike, 2 green, tapered 2–5 mm. Petals 80, reflexed, pink to purple (red in hybrid cultivar “Red Apple”), 3–4 mm. Stamens 80, arising from hypanthium, Staminodia 50, erect, white, 3 mm. Ovary inferior, 4-loculed; placentation axile; styles absent; stigmas 4, linear.

Fruit: Capsules hygroscopic; obconic; valves 4; valve lids and wings absent 13–15 mm. Seeds 800; brownish black; flat; tuberculate; arils absent.
